Dr Gavin Kirk
Consultant Pathologist Clinical Unit Head- Forensic Pathology Service, Western Cape Government
Dr Kirk obtained his MBBCh degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1982. After registering as a medical practitioner with the SAMDC, Dr Kirk held the positions of medical officer and registrar at several state hospitals in Kwa-Zulu Natal during the years 1984-2003. In 2003 he obtained his FC For Path (SA) and went on to consult as a specialist pathologist for the Department of Health (KZN) and the University of Natal. In 2010, he joined the Forensic Pathology services (Western Cape) as a senior specialist and lecturer at the University of Cape Town. Currently, Dr Kirk is head of the Clinical Unit (Principal Specialist) for Forensic Pathology Services. Dr Kirk’s interests include investigating sudden deaths in sport; firearm injuries; drug-related deaths and forensic histopathology, in addition to exploring the history of forensic medicine. To date, he has over 10 peer-reviewed publications, and has presented at many prestigious international conferences and meetings.
