Forensic Pathology Seminar Day

On 4 April 2014 the Division of Forensic Medicine presented the Forensic Pathology Seminar Day, with special guest lecturer Dr Jan Garavaglia.

Dr Garavaglia is the Chief Medical Examiner for Orange and Osceola counties in Orlando, Florida. Garavaglia received her medical degree from the Saint Louis University School of Medicine and completed an internship in internal medicine and residency in anatomic/clinical pathology at Saint Louis University Hospitals. She also completed a fellowship in forensic pathology at the Dade County Medical Examiner's Office in Miami. She is board-certified in combined anatomic and clinical pathology and forensic pathology.

Expert Testimony Talks

A day seminar on Expert Testimony was hosted by the Division of Forensic Medicine on the medical campus of UCT on 5 February 2014. Invited speakers included delegates from the NPA, department of Justice, defence lawyers and scientists, informed the guests of the process and procedures and the use of scientific evidence in the courtroom as well as how to conduct oneself as an expert witness testifying in court.

Dr Marise Heyns was invited to attend the 1st National Forensic Services Conference of SAPS in Pretoria, 02 – 04 July 2013, where she presented a paper entitled "The Role of Tertiary Institutions in the Fight against Crime".

 


A group of delegates attended the 2nd National Forensic Services Conference of SAPS in Pretoria, 09-13 February 2014. Dr Marise Heyns, Dr Iekram Alli and Dr Sairita Maistry all presented papers. Two of the recent graduates of the Masters in Biomedical Forensic Science programme, Calvin Mole and Mo Kasu, also presented their research.
